Today, I celebrate the beautiful moments and precious memories shared at the African Clean Up Initiative, Lagos in February 2024.I  want to take this moment to appreciate  Dr. Alex Akhigbe, CEO and Founder,African Clean Up initiative, who is also one of my mentors in the field of environmental sustainability. I was indeed fascinated while at his office, by the numerous awards received by him for his amazing impact in the field of environmental sustainability.

“Planet Earth is God’s Gift to Man, What you do with it, is your Gift back to Him” is a beautiful quote from Dr. Alexander Akhigbe which has inspired me greatly. I was indeed fascinated while at his office, by the numerous awards received by Dr. Alex Akhigbe,CEO and Founder,African Clean Up initiative. I am also grateful for the wonderful privilege of having some of my climate change poems featured in the African Clean Up Initiative Magazines and Conference Proceedings.

African Clean Up Initiative (ACI) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) registered with Corporate Affairs Commission in Nigeria with head office in Lagos State. ACI is driven by the desire to raise environmentally responsible citizens. Having started operations in 2010 with a sanitation and advocacy project – Clean Up Nigeria, the organization’s major focus areas include environmental sanitation, environmental health, environmental education and community development.

Dr. Alex Akhigbe is also the Founder of the Recycles Pay Educational project which is an Eco-friendly innovation that makes education affordable and accessible to children in low-income schools. The project has received the endorsement of school owners and parents to show that it is a viable project. The project allows the payment of school fees or other school payment(s) with any of these recyclables: PET bottles, pure water sachets, cans, etc.

The project aims to:

  • Provide an eco-friendly solution for parents to keep their children in school
  • Eliminate financial issues as an excuse that parents give for not sending their children to school
  • Enable recyclers to contribute to education and community development
  • Reduce the rate of illegal disposals of PET bottles and cans
  • Reduce the rate of drainage blockage and flooding caused by waste pollution
  • Promote environmental sensitization / awareness and re-orientation of residents
  • Promote cleanliness and healthy living

The project addresses ten (10) global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) out of the 17 SDGs:

  • 1-No Poverty
  • 3 Good Health and Wellbeing
  • 4-Quality Education
  • 6-Clean Water and Sanitation
  • 8-Decent Work and Economic Growth
